This Weeks Speaker-Marika Mulqueen

Marika says:

"In June 2009 I attempted to ride the entire Tour de France route as per the professional schedule for charity. The Tour de France is one of the most gruelling sporting events in the world. It's 3500 km long over 21 stages with the total climb for the ride equal to riding up three Mount Everests.

The 2009 route took me through France, Spain and Italy as well as over the Alps and the Pyrenees. An average days riding was 200km and myself and two other cyclists rode through extreme heat, snow, rain and strong wind. We endured falls, punctures, dehydration, hunger, being completely and utterly lost and run-ins with the police.

In my presentation I recount my adventure and how I managed to complete the challenge even though I'd only been training for five months beforehand and had taken up riding not long before that!"

Marika is a dynamic, inspiring and thoroughly interesting speaker and an extraordinary lady" BE SURE TO PUT THIS EVENING ASIDE TO COME ALONG AND LISTEN TO HER  http://cyclingwitheddie.wordpress.com/category/people-profiles/

STEPS Outreach Service

Donation of Sleeping Bags.

The Rotary Club of Albert Park with thanks from Rotarian Ken Hall have been able to donate six new sleeping bags to Steps Outreach Service.   This is not the first time our club have donated sleeping bags to this organisation and we look forward when we can again give further support.

Pictured Anne Mitchell from Steps Outreach Service gratefully acknowledgeing six sleeping bags being donated by The Rotary Club of Albert Park. Pictured above Anne Mitchell Manager concern australia and rotarian Henry Michaelsen.

Since 1985, Steps Outreach Service has been supporting homeless young people and marginalised families in inner Melbourne. The Concern Australia Steps team works on the streets at night engaging with homeless young people who congregate around Flinders Street Station. Steps provide relational support to homeless young people, and assist young people to engage and be engaged in the community.

Steps receives no government funding, and relies on God and the support of generous donors to provide the spiritual and material support for the young people they assist.

Asylum Seeker Employment Project

The Rotary Club of Albert Park

together with members from

Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project

http://www.brigidineasp.org.au/

are working together on the

Asylum Seeker Employment Project.

The first  challenge facing new arrivals in Australia is to find a job.  Another big challenge is to become known in the local community.  These two challenges are connected. It is said that 80% of job vacancies are never advertised and that many jobs are filled through word of mouth or through networking. Networking is talking to people you know about jobs.

New arrivals in Australia don't have any networks, which are so important, especially in getting their first job. This is especially in the case of Asylum Seekers because their families, friends and people they worked with in the past are not in Australia.

In order to help them become better known locally the RCAP has offered to assist asylum seekers associated the  Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project by placing profiles of individual asylum seekers on their web site for their members. It is hoped that some of these members may be able to assist some of you with your job search or perhaps with work experience opportunities in Australian workplaces.
